Playing Format
There will be 2 phases
Phase 1
Phase 1 will be a round robin amongst all teams in the division (i.e. if you are in a division of 8 teams you will play 7 games)
The results from the round robin will determine your seeding within the Phase 2 Playoff bracket
NOTE: If teams are tied after Phase 1 (round robin phase) the tiebreaker will be the head-to-head results. Therefore every game in Phase 1 is very important!
Phase 2
Phase 2 will be a single elimination bracket
The top 4 teams after the round robin will go into the Championship Bracket
The 1st round (semi-finals) will be 1 game to 15 win by 2 using traditional scoring
The winners of the 1st round of the bracket will play for Gold/Silver
Games to 11 win by 2 traditional scoring
Best 2 out of 3
The losers of the 1st round of the bracket will play for Bronze
One game to 15 win by 2 traditional scoring
The rest of the teams after the round robin will go into the Consolation Bracket
All matches in the Consolation Bracket will be 1 game to 15 traditional scoring
Winners of the Consolation Bracket earn the 5th place designation. Losers earn the 6th place designation
All other teams end up tied for 7th
Scoring
Phase 1 games (Round Robin phase) will use rally scoring to 15 win by 2 with a freeze at 14
The first team to 14 will be “frozen” and can only score on their serve while the trailing team can score on serve and/or receive
If the trailing team manages to tie the game at 14-14 then the freeze is off and regular rally scoring is reinstituted until a team has a 2 point advantage (no cap)
Phase 2 games (Playoff Bracket) will use regular (traditional sideout) scoring win by 2
Officiating
One of the hardest things to arrange when organizing a tournament are referees. At club levels referees are responsible for the score and some line calls and that’s about it. In this tournament we will NOT have any referees and will instead use a “Challenge Resolution System”
Score Disagreement Challenge Resolution
During the 1st phase of the tournament it would be unusual if there was a disagreement between teams as to the score since we will be using rally scoring for the round robin phase. During the bracket phase we will be using traditional scoring which can lead to disagreements as to the score. If there is a disagreement as to the score or which server (1st or 2nd) the teams will resolve this disagreement by playing Rock, Paper, Scissors with the winning team determining the score that will be adopted.
Play Dispute Challenge Resolution
We have all played in games when a ball has been called out that you were sure was in. If there is a dispute as to a line call (or any other call that a referee might make) a team may use 1 challenge per game to overrule the call (or noncall) and force a replay. If the other team is unwilling to replay the point they may then issue their own counter-challenge (a challenge of a challenge) which will result in the original call being upheld. If this were to happen then both teams have used their challenge for the game and no further challenges are allowed. NOTE: The purpose of this counter-challenge is to prevent teams from issuing an unwarranted challenge just so that they get a 2nd chance. Keep it fair and keep it classy everyone.
Timeouts
Each team is allowed one 60 second timeout per game in both phases of the tournament.
Skill Level Adjudication
It is expected that teams will be realistic when it comes to deciding which division they should play in. In order to guard against teams “sandbagging” (playing in a division that is significantly below their level) a committee will review the registrations and if the committee determines that a team has not registered in the proper division they will remove that team and place them in a higher division. NOTE: If the higher division is already full then the team that the committee is reassigning might end up on the waiting list and might ultimately not be able to play. Therefore be ruthlessly honest when it comes to which division you want to play in. If you are in doubt you should contact the committee at wkpc.council@wkpc.club BEFORE you register!
